Background and Purpose of the Job

The Maintenance Engineer role is critical to the development of our factories to World Class, which means zero defects, zero waste and zero losses. The Maintenance Engineer role will focus on creating the proactive maintenance strategy to the site based on line asset criticality and implementing it to success, to achieve zero breakdowns due to lack of basic conditions and evolve the site from corrective to preventive and then predictive maintenance where applicable.

Working directly with the area leaders, technical experts, automation technicians and process engineers, the Maintenance Engineer is responsible as well for training the teams in the maintenance processes and tools in line with our Continuous Improvement methodology. The person will lead the Preventive Maintenance Pillar and support Run to Standard cell progression to deliver Safety, Quality and OPE. The role reports to the Maintenance Manager and engages with all other UMS (Unilever Manufacturing System) pillars to give and receive support.

  • You’re a dot connector: You have the ability to make complex situations understandable to different team members at the factory, from factory director, managers, business unit leaders, engineers and hourly teams, to link the maintenance strategy with each site’s specific needs and requirements, engaging and influencing teams to drive execution. You leverage technical knowledge from the team members, and you use a systematic approach to ensure that performance results are achieved through a robust maintenance strategy.

  • You love to win and have fun doing it: You have the ability to balance a variety of priorities while maintaining healthy relationships across the site team, key stakeholders and customers. You are a true maintenance leader and champion, and you see it as a value creation instead of cost element.

Key Deliverables:

  • Lead the Preventive Maintenance (PM) Pillar within our Unilever Manufacturing System/ManEx and meet KPI targets.

  • Optimize, Create and Implement the Maintenance strategy (short term and long term) for the site, moving from corrective to preventive and then predictive Maintenance (where applicable), following the asset criticality.

  • 100% compliance to all regulatory requirements within maintenance (e.g. calibrations, pressure vessels, certifications, etc.)

  • Develop replication strategy for similar assets according to asset criticality.

  • Implement digital tools in Maintenance, including the Digital Maintenance Management System (DMMS) and dashboards for real-time data visibility and analysis.

  • Eliminate losses due to breakdowns and minor stops related to lack of maintenance according to the WCM prioritization process using PM, FI and QC pillar tools and methodologies.

  • Implement preventative, predictive maintenance and design/ automation improvements to maintain basic conditions and increase MTBF and reduce MTTR. 

  • Lead maintenance optimization and planning through Run to Standard program to deliver critical KPI's including but not limited to Safety, Quality and OPE targets.

  • Lead/ Manage (update/ maintain) PHA (Plant Health Assessment) and asset criticality for the site, using the tool proactively to extend assets’ lifetime.

  • Manage site/ asset obsolescence proactively.

  • Train operations and maintenance team members on technical standards, continuous improvement methods related to maintenance and sustainability of basic conditions.

  • Identify and extend good practice to other areas of the factory and keep track of best practices created and replicated.

  • Develop spare parts strategy for improvement, cost reduction and synergies.

  • Improve downtime effectiveness for maintenance.

  • Develop and maintain bottom-up maintenance budget based on original maintenance schedule. Identify and deliver cost savings year over year.

  • Measure, monitor and improve Key Performance Indicators (as driven by Cost Deployment Analysis), for example: EWO completion, WO completion rate, Breakdowns (PM Loss), Maintenance Cost, Benefit/Cost Ratio, Spare parts cost reduction, etc.

  • Support decarbonization agenda

What You’ll Need To Succeed

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic or Chemical Engineering preferred). 

  • At least 5 years previous experience in Maintenance, including CMMS, Maintenance planning, scheduling and zero-base budgeting.

  • Knowledge of Maintenance and Facilities Systems.

  • Understands the application of TPM/ WCM/UMS. Preferable Lean/ Six Sigma certification. Experience in implementing PM pillar will be a plus.

  • Understands and Implements Continuous Improvement to drive performance for loss management. 

  • Problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Effectively able to communicate with factory teams and stakeholders, with the ability to convey complex information in simple formats, to drive program and reduce barriers for execution.

  • Understands key types if machinery equipment, suppliers and functional specification requirements. 

  • Preferred experience in FMCG.

  • Ability to deal with digital systems such as Microsoft Tools, PowerBI.

Pay: The pay range for this position is $84,400 to $126,600. Unilever takes into consideration a wide range of factors that are utilized in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, qualifications and education, and other business and organizational needs.

Bonus: This position is bonus eligible.

Long-Term Incentive (LTI): This position is LTI eligible.
