Job Title: Formulation Technologist - Skin Care & Feel
Location: Leeds Office and R&D
Travel: 5%
JOB PURPOSE
This role focuses on the development of leading-edge formulations and technologies across one or several applicator types to deliver new products for global rollout through working with the formulation and research teams and external suppliers.
Key Challenges of the role
- Taking responsibility for delivering new formulations and/or technology for global innovation projects across one or several applicator types.
- Support capability managers to build formulation applicator and/or technology capability working with external parties.
High level of technical input at both theoretical and practical levels.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for leading a formulation work-stream within a medium project or CBP team to deliver a new formulation and/or technology for a specific applicator and/or multiple formulation streams in smaller projects, working with new technologies where appropriate. Communicate updates to the team and to the global formulation community, making recommendations.
- Creates formulations to meet consumer needs by manufacturing and testing, new and existing formulations and using technical expertise to solve specific issues related to new ingredients/technologies, ingredient interactions, physical properties, stability, and processing. Responsible for securing clearances using regulatory and safety clearance software tools.
- Working with suppliers/third parties, S&T, SEAC; scouting for technical ideas/solutions; have an understanding of confidential agreements and provide support when required and contributing to the patenting process of any new technology breakthroughs. Effectively communicate with different functional areas of the business to ensure deadlines are met.
- High level of technical input at both theoretical and practical levels, having recognisable expertise in a specific formulation/applicator types or technology/benefit areas providing technical support and/or answering queries to the PIT team/BU’s.
- Awareness of competitor launches specific to applicator/benefit area and through formulation expertise to understand implications for Unilever products/ brands and to generate support for claim/patent challenges.
- Support technical project leader and/or claims activation team on general project management activities supporting claim substantiation and technical specifications.
- Using specialised technical knowledge and rigour to develop new protocols and characterisation techniques and to identify new equipment requirements on specific applicator and/or benefit.
- Working safety and to the high standards within the lab, preparation of relevant COSHH and risk assessment. Contributing to the site/R&D safety culture. Responsible for co-ordinating and implementing appropriate technical training to facilitate development and understanding on specific applicator within the formulation roles and when necessary, across functional teams.
- To prepare relevant documentation for laboratory technicians such as batch sheets, gassing sheets, results templates for capturing data in relevant Unilever software. Where appropriate checking and signing off gas sheets.
EXPERIENCE
Education: Preferably degree level in relevant science or engineering discipline.
- Formulation Chemistry – understanding of ingredients, ability to modify and manipulate formulations.
- Evaluate and understand interactions between ingredients within formulation/process/pack.
- Analytical capability – analyses and interprets data.
- Design of experiments/protocol development.
- Designing new products/CFD’s to specific briefs that deliver to consumer in-sights e.g., 72hrs claims.
- Intellectual property understanding.
- Technical Knowledge of Supply chain, CTI and fragrance development processes.
- Physical stability assessment capability.
- Understanding consumer insights and needs.
- Claims generation and substantiation.
- Information Management knowledge capture and reporting
- Stakeholder management - working with external & internal partners.
- Project Management.
- Strategic Implementation.
- Health & Safety regulations and process e.g. COSHH.
- Effective communication.
- Digital skills: data handling, analysis and interpretation of data and competent using Unilever digital tools to gather data and insights.
RELEVENT EXPERIENCE
- Knowledge of laboratory techniques gained in FMCG, cosmetic care or similar discipline.
- Some packaging and processing knowledge would be an advantage.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Limited travel with overnight stays maybe necessary.
- Full Eu driving licence is desirable.

Cyber criminals advertise fake job adverts with prestigious employers as a way of stealing information or even defrauding individuals out of money. In the most sophisticated cases, they will set up fake websites, which have a similar address to companies like Unilever. They even conduct fake telephone interviews and then offer candidates a role with the proviso they pay a fee for background checks or to cover work visa costs. These types of attacks are becoming more common as more people are looking for employment in the economic climate.
How is Unilever tackling this?
Many of Unilever’s recruitment sites publish a warning to candidates about recruitment fraud. The Cyber Security team also proactively scan for signs of people setting up fake Unilever sites and act to close them down.
